Introduction to Chromebooks

Support staff and relief register workers are provided with a Microsoft 365 E1 account.  This account provides access to online and mobile app versions of Microsoft Office and Teams.  The online versions can be accessed through a web browser.

Where a candidate has no access to the equipment needed to complete their SVQ coursework, we may provide a Chromebook for the duration of their study period.  Chromebook is a low cost alternative to a laptop and it uses the Chrome web browser as its main interface.  This is ideal for using the online versions of Microsoft 365.

Device Log in - You will sign in to the Chromebook using your Microsoft 365 username and password.  The username is your work email address.

Accessing Microsoft 365 services - In the browser address bar, visit https://microsoft365.com/.  A window will pop up and you should sign in using your Microsoft 365 username and password.  Once signed in you'll see the Microsoft 365 home page.

Microsoft 365 homepage

In the main area of the homepage you'll see recently opened and edited documents.

Down the left hand side of the window are a series of buttons that open the core Microsoft Apps:

  • My Content - This pulls together documents you've worked on and provides access to your personal OneDrive document store.
  • Outlook - This app contains your emails and calendar.  You can also create and schedule tasks to help manage your studies.  Further information about the Outlook web app can be found here.
  • Teams - This app allows you to collaborate in real time using Chat instead of email, share documents and access your calendar.  Further information about Teams can be found here.
  • Word - This is the main app for completing assignments and assessments.  Templates shared by your assessor and us will use this app by default.  Further information can be found here.
  • Excel - This is a spreadsheet application used to gather and analyse data.  We don't expect you to use this app during your SVQ studies.  Further information can be found here.
  • PowerPoint - This is a presentations app, though it can be used as a basic page layout editor to produce documents that combine words and pictures in a creative way.
