What number formatting options are available?

Amongst others the following options are available:

  • Cell formatting optionsGeneral: These cells have no specific number or text formats.
  • Number: General number display.
  • Currency: General financial values.
  • Accounting: As above with the added feature of being able to align symbols and decimal points.
  • Date: Displays a number values in user selected date formats.
  • Time: Displays number values in user selected time formats.
  • Percentage: Multiplies the cell value by 100 and displaying the result with a percentage symbol.
  • Text: Entry formatted as text even when a number is entered.

How do I reformat my cells?

  1. Select the cell(s) to be reformatted.
  2. Number formatting drop down menuIn the ‘Home’ ribbon, click the ‘Number Format’ drop down menu.
  3. Choose a formatting option from those displayed.

How do I display my value as currency?

  1. Select the cell(s) to be reformatted.
  2. Currency drop down menuIn the ‘Home’ ribbon, click the ‘Currency’ drop down menu.
  3. Click one of the options displayed.

How do I adjust the number of decimal places shown?

  1. Select the cells to be reformatted.
  2. Decimal point buttonIn the ‘Home’ ribbon, click the increase/decrease decimal points buttons as required.

How do I format my cells as a percentage?

  1. Select the cell(s) you wish to reformat.

How do I format negative numbers to be displayed in red?

  1. Select the cell(s) you wish to reformat.
  2. Format Cells buttonIn the ‘Home’ ribbon, click to display the ‘Format Cells’ dialogue box.
  3. Number formatting dialogue boxClick the ‘Number’ tab if not already displayed.
  4. Choose 'Number' in the 'Category' section.
  5. In the ‘Negative numbers:’ section choose the appropriate formatting.
  6. Click ‘OK’.

How do I stop the ‘0’ disappearing at the start of a number?

If you type a number beginning with ‘0’ (for example a telephone number) the ‘0’ will be removed when you press <Enter>. To overcome this format the cells as text. You may need to retype the 0 after completing this.

  1. Select the cell(s) you wish to reformat.
  2. In the ‘Home’ ribbon, click the ‘Number Format’ drop down menu.
  3. Click ‘Text’ from the formatting options displayed.

How do I use a comma separator when displaying 1000s?

  1. Select the cell(s) you wish to reformat.
  2. Comman style buttonIn the ‘Home’ ribbon, click the ‘Comma Style’ drop down menu.

How do I clear all cell formatting?

  1. Select the cell(s) with the formatting you wish to clear.
  2. clear formats drop down menuIn the ‘Home’ ribbon, click the ‘Clear’ drop down menu.
  3. Click ‘Clear Formats’.

The text in the selected cell(s) will return to the default font and font size.
