What are workbooks and worksheets?

Worksheets are individual spreadsheets within your workbook. A workbook is an Excel file made up of one or more worksheets.

What are ‘columns’ and ‘column headers’?

Column header examplesColumns run vertically down your worksheet. There can be up to 256 columns in any one worksheet. The column headers run across the top of your worksheet and
are the boxes named A-ZZ.

What are ‘rows’ and ‘row headers’?

Row header exampleRows run horizontally across your worksheet and can have up to 65,536 rows in any one worksheet. The row headers run down the left hand side of your worksheet and are the boxes numbered 1-65,536.

What are ‘cells’?

Each box where a column and a row intersect is called a cell. It is in these cells that data is entered. A worksheet is therefore just a collection of cells.

How are cells referenced?

Cell reference exampleA cell is named after the point where the column and row intersect. In the example opposite cell B2 is the active cell.

How are cell ranges referenced?

Cell range exampleCell ranges are named using the first (top left) and last (bottom right) cell references in the selected area, separated by a colon (:).
